Keep your wheels clean of brake dust

Are your wheels covered in a black powdery residue? It's likely brake dust, even though it doesn't look like dirt. It sticks to the wheels of your vehicle and can cause them to look dingy. Brake dust can not only affect the appearance of your vehicle's wheels, but it can also cause other problems.

What is brake dust?

Brake dust is a small particle from the brake pads of your vehicle. Brake pads, calipers, and rotors are all part of an automotive braking system. The brake pedal will be squeezed by the calipers, and the brake pads will squeeze rotors to slow your vehicle down.

The brake pads will squeeze every time you press down on the brake pedal. They will eventually become less durable due to the constant squeeze action. The brake pads will be ripped apart by small pieces of material. Small pieces of the brake rotors could also be broken off. This particulate matter is called brake dust.

HOW BRAKE DUST AFFECTS WHEELS

Brake dust can scratch the wheels of your vehicle if it isn't cleaned regularly. Brake dust is the material that brake pads and rotors are made from. It also contains metal shavings. The majority of brake dust is made up of iron and carbon. Iron shavings can cause scratches on the wheels of your vehicle.

Valve stems can also be clogged by brake dust. The small tubes that allow you to refill your tires' air are called valve stems. To prevent debris from entering, valve stems are usually fitted with a cap. Brake dust can sometimes get into a valve stem if there is no cap or it has been damaged. Brake dust can get into the valve stem and cause a blockage. The clogged valve stem will prevent you from refilling air.

TIPS FOR CLEANING BRAKE DUST

A wheel cleaner can be used to clean brake dust from your vehicle's wheels. There are many types of wheel cleaners. They come in a variety of liquid- or foam-based sprays. They are not recommended for use on vehicles' bodies, but they can be used safely on wheels. The best wheel cleaning products can dissolve and remove stubborn brake dust.

To clean brake dust, you might also want to use a wheel cleaner. Brake dust can be stubborn. It is not possible to remove brake dust by spraying water on it. You can loosen brake dust with a soft-bristle toothbrush. You can scrub the wheels of your vehicle with the brush and then rinse them. You can easily remove brake dust by scrubbing.
